Balloon Mitral Valvuloplasty

Balloon Mitral Valvuloplasty is a medical procedure performed to address a narrowed and stiff heart valve, a condition known as stenosis. During this procedure, a specialized medical team typically led by a cardiologist inserts a small, thin, and hollow tube, called a catheter, into a blood vessel in the groin. This catheter is then carefully advanced through the aorta and into the heart.

Once the catheter is in position within the heart, a deflated balloon at its tip is precisely guided to the site of the narrowed mitral valve. The balloon is then inflated, which exerts controlled pressure on the narrowed valve, effectively widening it and improving blood flow through the heart.

Symptoms

Balloon Mitral Valvuloplasty can manifest with a variety of symptoms, which may include:

  1. Increased body weight.
  2. Reduced strength or muscle weakness.
  3. Episodes of lightheadedness or feeling dizzy.
  4. Accumulation of fluid, resulting in swelling in the ankles, feet, and/or abdomen (known as edema).
  5. Heart palpitations, characterized by an irregular heartbeat.

When to access Medical Care

Balloon Mitral Valvuloplasty is a procedure performed to address a heart valve that has developed stiffness.

However, it’s important to note that not all conditions involving stiffened heart valves can be effectively treated with valvuloplasty. When heart valves become damaged or diseased, they may lose their normal functionality. Conditions that can lead to issues with heart valves include valvular stenosis (resulting in stiffened valves) and valvular regurgitation (resulting in leaky valves).

When one or more heart valves become stiff, it places additional strain on the heart muscle, which has to work harder to pump blood through the affected valve. Stiffened valves can be caused by various factors, including infections like rheumatic fever or staphylococcus infections, congenital heart defects present at birth, and the natural aging process.

In cases where one or more valves become leaky, blood flows backward, leading to less efficient circulation in the intended direction.

Determinants of risk

Here are the possible complications that can be linked to both mitral valve repair and mitral valve replacement surgery:

  1. Excessive bleeding.
  2. Blood clot formation.
  3. Impaired function of the replaced valve (relevant in replacement surgery).
  4. Irregular heart rhythms.
  5. Infections.
  6. Risk of stroke.

Recovery process

Recovery duration varies, contingent on factors like patient characteristics, chosen procedure, and the extent of severity.
