Breast Lumpectomy

A breast lumpectomy, also known as a partial mastectomy or breast-conserving surgery, is a surgical procedure performed to remove a breast lump or tumor along with a surrounding margin of normal breast tissue. Unlike a mastectomy, which involves removing the entire breast, a lumpectomy aims to preserve as much of the breast tissue as possible while effectively treating the breast condition, such as breast cancer.

Lumpectomy is often followed by radiation therapy to reduce the risk of cancer recurrence. It is considered a less invasive option compared to mastectomy and is suitable for many women with early-stage breast cancer or certain benign breast conditions.

Symptoms

Breast cancer can present with various signs and symptoms, including:

  • A noticeable lump or thickening in the breast that feels different from the surrounding tissue.
  • Changes in the size, shape, or appearance of the breast.
  • Alterations to the skin over the breast, such as dimpling.
  • Newly inverted nipple.
  • Skin changes around the nipple or breast skin, such as peeling, scaling, crusting, or flaking.
  • Redness or indentation of the skin over the breast, resembling the texture of an orange peel.

When to access Medical Care

It’s important to access medical care promptly if you’re undergoing or have undergone a breast lumpectomy and experience any of the following:

  1. Excessive bleeding or drainage from the surgical site.
  2. Signs of infection, such as increased redness, warmth, swelling, or pain at the incision site.
  3. Fever or chills.
  4. Worsening pain or discomfort that is not relieved by pain medication.
  5. Changes in breast appearance or texture, such as new lumps, dimpling, or skin changes.
  6. Any other concerning symptoms or complications related to the surgery.

If you experience any of these issues, contact your healthcare provider or the surgical team immediately for further evaluation and guidance. It’s essential to address any post-operative concerns promptly to ensure optimal healing and recovery.

Determinants of risk

Having one or several risk factors for breast cancer doesn’t guarantee that you’ll develop the disease, but it does increase the likelihood. Common risk factors include:

  • Gender: Women are more susceptible to breast cancer than men.
  • Giving birth at an older age: Women who have their first child after age 30 may face a higher risk of breast cancer.
  • Aging: The risk of breast cancer increases with age.
  • Personal history of breast conditions.
  • Family history of breast cancer.
  • Inherited genes associated with increased cancer risk.
  • Early onset of menstruation.
  • Nulliparity: Never having been pregnant.
  • Late onset of menopause: Starting menopause at an older age is linked to a higher risk of breast cancer.

Recovery process

Recovery duration varies, contingent on factors like patient characteristics, chosen procedure, and the extent of severity.
