Breast Abscess Drainage
A breast abscess is a painful lump filled with pus beneath the skin of the breast. It often occurs as a complication of mastitis, an infection of the breast tissue, and is more common among lactating women.
Symptoms
If someone has developed a breast abscess, they may feel or notice a mass in the breast tissue along with symptoms of infection. These symptoms can include:
- Reduced milk production
- Warmth in the affected area
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Breast pain
- Nipple discharge
- Flu-like symptoms
- High fever
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Flushed skin
When to access Medical Care
All individuals with mastitis should seek treatment as soon as possible. If someone experiences symptoms of this infection for longer than 24 hours, they should consult a physician promptly and request antibiotics.
Determinants of risk
Risk factors for breast-related conditions include:
Breast mass – Persistent pain, scarring or disfigurement, metastases (spread of cancer), postsurgical complications (such as ipsilateral lymphedema), and mortality.
Mastitis – Breast abscess formation in less than 10% of cases.
Breast abscess – Recurrent infection, scarring, loss of breast tissue, and significant breast asymmetry.
Chronic breast abscess – Mammary duct fistulization (formation of abnormal connections), resection of the nipple-areolar complex.
Recovery process
Recovery duration varies, contingent on factors like patient characteristics, chosen procedure, and the extent of severity.
