Anorectal Manometry

Anorectal manometry is a diagnostic test designed to assess the functionality of the rectum and anal sphincters. This examination is commonly administered to individuals experiencing issues such as fecal incontinence, constipation, and pediatric cases of Hirschsprung’s disease.

The procedure involves measuring the coordination between the rectum and the anal sphincters in the elimination of stool. The anal sphincter, comprised of internal and external components, functions as a valve regulating stool continence. Comprising muscular structures that govern the opening and closing of the anus, the test evaluates the effectiveness of this intricate mechanism to ensure proper bowel function.

Symptoms

The anorectal manometry test is typically administered to individuals experiencing:

  1. Difficulty in bowel movement.
  2. Fecal incontinence, characterized by the inability to control bowels, leading to fecal leakage.
  3. Constipation, is defined as having less than three bowel movements per week.
  4. Hirschsprung’s disease in children, a condition that can result in a blockage in the large intestine.

When to access Medical Care

The process of having a bowel movement involves coordinated efforts between specialized muscles and nerves in the rectum and anal canal. In a typical scenario, when stool enters the rectum, the anal sphincter muscles contract to impede the passage of stool until reaching a toilet. Weakness or delayed contraction of these muscles may result in fecal incontinence, leading to stool leakage.

Conversely, during the act of pushing to have a bowel movement, the anal sphincter muscles should relax to facilitate stool expulsion. If these muscles tighten instead, it may contribute to the occurrence of constipation.

Determinants of risk

Following the completion of the test, several expectations can be anticipated:

  1. Results Discussion: Your healthcare provider will engage in a discussion with you to review and explain the findings of the manometry test.

  2. Resumption of Normal Routine: You can return home and typically resume your regular diet and activities.

  3. Monitoring Unusual Symptoms: If you observe any unusual symptoms or experience side effects, it is advisable to contact your doctor promptly for further evaluation and guidance.

Recovery process

Recovery duration varies, contingent on factors like patient characteristics, chosen procedure, and the extent of severity.
