Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia Treatment

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), also known as CAH, is a genetic disorder characterized by improper functioning of the two adrenal glands situated atop the kidneys.

This dysfunction arises from mutations in the gene responsible for encoding the enzyme adrenal steroid 21-hydroxylase. In the absence of this crucial enzyme, the adrenal glands may underproduce cortisol and/or aldosterone while overproducing androgen hormones.

Symptoms

When left undiagnosed, symptoms of classic salt-wasting congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) can manifest within days or weeks of birth, and in severe cases, it may even lead to fatalities. These symptoms may encompass:

  1. Metabolic acidosis, characterized by an excess of acid in the blood.
  2. Dehydration.
  3. Inadequate feeding.
  4. Diarrhea.
  5. Vomiting.
  6. Irregularities in heart rhythm (arrhythmias).
  7. Low blood pressure.
  8. Markedly reduced blood sodium levels.

Diagnose

Diagnostic tests employed to identify congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) in fetuses at risk for the condition include:

  1. Amniocentesis: This procedure entails using a needle to extract a sample of amniotic fluid from the womb, followed by the examination of these cells.

  2. Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS): This test involves the retrieval of cells from the placenta for subsequent examination.

When to access Medical Care

Classic congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is typically identified shortly after birth, either through mandatory newborn screening or when female infants exhibit ambiguous genitalia.

In cases of CAH, detection may also occur if male or female infants display signs of severe illness due to insufficient levels of cortisol, aldosterone, or both. Children with nonclassic CAH may exhibit signs and symptoms of early puberty.

If you have concerns about your child’s growth or development, it is advisable to schedule an appointment with your child’s healthcare provider. Furthermore, if you are pregnant and have a potential risk of CAH due to your medical history or ethnicity, it is important to seek medical attention and guidance.

Recovery process

Recovery duration varies, contingent on factors like patient characteristics, chosen procedure, and the extent of severity.
