Rastelli Procedure
The Rastelli procedure is a surgical technique employed to address certain cases of Dextro-Transposition of the Great Arteries (D-TGA). This congenital heart condition involves a reversal of the primary blood vessels originating from the heart.
In infants born with D-TGA, the aorta and the pulmonary artery are connected to the heart in a switched manner, leading to abnormal blood circulation. The Rastelli procedure is designed to correct this anomaly by rerouting the blood flow to restore a more normal circulation pattern.
Symptoms
Common symptoms may include:
- Paleness.
- Shortness of breath.
- Difficulty in gaining weight.
- Rapid or fast breathing.
- Frequent occurrences of respiratory infections.
When to access Medical Care
This procedure is employed to correct specific combinations of congenital heart defects, which may include:
- Transposition of the great arteries (TGA) with ventricular septal defect (VSD) and pulmonary stenosis.
- Overriding of the aorta with severe pulmonary stenosis or pulmonary atresia.
- Pulmonary atresia with a ventricular septal defect.
- Double outlet right ventricle (DORV) with pulmonary stenosis or pulmonary atresia.
- Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF).
Babies born with these conditions often undergo initial palliative treatments soon after birth, such as the placement of a shunt (tube) to enhance blood flow to the lungs. Subsequently, the more complex Rastelli procedure is typically performed when the child is older and stronger, usually between the ages of 1 and 2. The child’s healthcare provider will offer guidance on the most suitable treatment options for the individual case.
Determinants of risk
Risk factors for certain congenital heart defects include:
- Down syndrome.
- Premature birth.
- Genetic predisposition.
- Family history of heart defects.
Recovery process
Recovery duration varies, contingent on factors like patient characteristics, chosen procedure, and the extent of severity.
