Heart Transplant
A heart transplant involves replacing a patient’s heart with a donor’s heart. Medical experts remove the patient’s heart by cutting the aorta, the main pulmonary artery, the superior and inferior vena cavae, and separating the left atrium, leaving the posterior wall of the left atrium intact with the openings for the pulmonary veins in place.
Symptoms
The primary symptoms include:
- Nausea
- Abdominal swelling
- Swift increase in body weight
- Breathing difficulties
- Pain in the chest
When to access Medical Care
A heart transplant may become necessary for various reasons, with the most common being the inadequate functioning of one of the heart’s two ventricles, leading to severe heart failure. Ventricular failure can manifest in several types of congenital heart diseases. However, it is more prevalent in cases of congenital defects with a single ventricle or when long-standing valve obstruction or leakage has caused irreversible heart failure.
Determinants of risk
In addition to the inherent risks associated with open-heart surgery, such as bleeding, infection, and blood clots, heart transplant procedures also carry the following potential risks:
- Primary graft failure
- Complications involving the patient’s arteries
- Rejection of the donor’s heart
- Side effects from medications
- Increased susceptibility to cancer
- Risk of infection
Recovery process
Recovery duration varies, contingent on factors like patient characteristics, chosen procedure, and the extent of severity.
