Glenn Shunt
A Glenn shunt, also known as a bidirectional Glenn shunt or simply a Glenn procedure, is a surgical procedure used in the treatment of certain congenital heart defects.
It is typically performed on infants and children born with complex heart conditions in which blood circulation to the lungs is impaired. The Glenn shunt is one stage of a multi-stage surgical approach to redirect blood flow and improve oxygenation in these cases.
During the Glenn shunt procedure, a connection is made between the superior vena cava (the large vein that carries deoxygenated blood from the upper body to the heart) and the pulmonary arteries (the blood vessels that carry blood to the lungs).
Symptoms
A newborn with hypoplastic left heart syndrome may exhibit the following symptoms:
- Rapid breathing
- Bluish or grayish skin and nail discoloration
- Feeding difficulties
- Reduced energy and activity levels
- Fewer wet diapers than usual
