Fontan Procedure
The Fontan cardiac procedure is the third and final staged congenital heart surgery performed to treat hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) and other single ventricle heart defects.
Symptoms
Signs to be aware of following the Fontan Procedure include:
- Cyanosis, characterized by a grayish (in dark-skinned individuals) or bluish (in light-skinned individuals) discoloration of the skin, lips, and nails.
- Breathing difficulties.
- Feeding difficulties.
- Fatigue or lethargy.
- Sweaty, clammy, or cool skin.
- Rapid heartbeat.
- Weak pulse.
When to access Medical Care
The Fontan procedure is designed to ensure that almost all of the deoxygenated (blue) blood returning from the body is directed to the lungs. Following this procedure, most children exhibit a healthier skin color because now, nearly all the blood pumped out to the body passes through the lungs first. In infants with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, low-oxygen blood from the lower part of the body used to mix with high-oxygen blood.
After the Fontan procedure, there is no longer mixing of low-oxygen and high-oxygen blood. This allows the heart to supply only oxygen-rich blood to the body.
Determinants of risk
The primary risk factor for hypoplastic left heart syndrome is having a child with this or a similar heart condition. Other clear risk factors for this syndrome are not well-established.
